Retirement Income Planning in Elk Grove

Before we suggest any product, we work out how much monthly income you will actually need and where it will come from. Then we show you which annuity or life insurance options close the gap, and which ones you can skip.

Start With the Gap, Not the Product

Retirement income planning answers one plain question: when your paychecks stop, will the money coming in cover the money going out, for as long as you live? Most people have pieces of an answer already. A pension, Social Security, a 401(k) or IRA, maybe some cash value in an older policy. What they lack is a clear picture of how those pieces fit together.

We build that picture first. We list your expected income sources, the ages they start, and your real monthly costs, including the ones people tend to forget, like health premiums before Medicare and property taxes. The difference between the two is your income gap. Only then do we talk about fixed or indexed annuities, cash value life insurance, or simply leaving things as they are.

What Our Retirement Income Review Covers

An income source inventory

We list every pension, Social Security estimate, retirement account and existing policy you have, with the age each one can begin paying. If you carry a public pension, its survivor options get a careful look.

A monthly cost picture

We sort your expenses into the ones that must be paid every month and the ones you can flex. That split decides how much income needs to be guaranteed.

Annuity options explained

If a gap remains, we compare fixed, fixed indexed and income annuities side by side. You see the surrender period, the fees, and what the contract pays under plain conditions, not just the best case.

A check on existing life coverage

An old whole life or universal life policy may hold cash value that can supplement income, or it may be doing a more important job protecting a spouse. We tell you which.

Beneficiary and survivor review

We confirm who receives what if you pass first, so a spouse is not left with half a pension and no backup.

Signs It's Time for a Retirement Income Plan

  • Your retirement date is getting close

With several working years still ahead, decisions about when to claim Social Security and whether to buy guaranteed income have time to pay off. Leave them to the final months and fewer choices remain.

  • You can't name your monthly retirement income

If you know your account balances but not what they translate to per month, the plan has a hole in it.

  • A pension election form is on your desk

Single-life versus joint-survivor choices are usually permanent. It pays to see the numbers both ways before you sign.

  • Your savings sit mostly in the market

A downturn right before or after you retire can do lasting damage. Some clients want a portion of income that does not move with the market.

  • Someone already pitched you an annuity

A second look is reasonable. We'll tell you whether the contract fits your gap or whether it solves a problem you don't have.

How We Work Through Your Plan

  1. 1

    A first phone conversation

We talk through your target retirement age, your income sources and what worries you most. There's no paperwork to fill out ahead of time.

  2. 2

    Gathering the real numbers

We go over your Social Security statement, pension estimates and account balances with you at your place of business or wherever suits you. Estimates replace guesses here.

  3. 3

    Measuring the gap

We lay out income against costs, year by year, and show you the shortfall or surplus. Sometimes the answer is that you are in better shape than you feared.

  4. 4

    Options, with honest trade-offs

If a product makes sense, we show two or three choices and what each gives up in liquidity, fees or flexibility. If nothing is needed, we say so.

  5. 5

Setting it in place and checking back

Once you decide, we handle the application and confirm beneficiaries. We revisit the plan as retirement gets closer or your situation changes.

What Shapes the Cost

Talking through your plan with us costs you nothing. Any cost comes from the products you choose, and those vary widely. We show every fee, rider charge and surrender schedule in writing before you commit.

Size of the income gap
A small shortfall may need a modest annuity or none at all. A large one calls for more of your savings to be committed to guaranteed income.
Your age when income starts
Starting payments later generally means higher monthly income for the same amount of money. Starting earlier lowers each payment.
Single or joint payout
Income that continues for a surviving spouse pays less per month than income on one life, because it is expected to last longer.
Optional riders
Income riders, inflation adjustments and long-term care features add value for some clients and add cost for all. We help you decide which ones earn their place.

Retirement Income Planning Questions

Something not covered here? (916) 384-3802

Do I need an annuity to retire comfortably?

Not necessarily. If your pension and Social Security already cover your essential monthly costs, an annuity may add little. We look at your gap first and only bring up an annuity if it solves a real shortfall.

How does life insurance fit into retirement income?

Cash value in a whole life or universal life policy can sometimes be drawn on to supplement income. A policy can also replace a pension that stops when you pass, so your spouse keeps an income. We check which role, if any, your coverage should play.

What age is best for claiming Social Security?

There's no single right age for everyone. Your health, your other income and your marital status all change the math. We put the monthly amounts for several claiming ages side by side so you can see how each one fits the rest of your plan. The decision stays with you.

What if I need my money back after buying an annuity?

Most annuities have a surrender period with charges for early withdrawal beyond a set yearly amount. That's why we keep part of your savings liquid and explain the surrender schedule in plain terms before you sign anything.

I already have a financial advisor. Can you still help?

Yes. Many clients bring us in to look at the insurance and guaranteed income side while their advisor manages investments. We're glad to share the income gap numbers so everyone works from the same picture.
